Judoka gold for The Boston Globe

March has been a busy month for me in Boston, I’ve been getting lots of great assignment work from the Globe – so I’m behind on my blogging… Here is a story about the Olympian Judo hopeful Kayla Harrison that I shot for Sports.

Kayla is 21 years old, already a judo world champion, and a favorite for the Olympic games this summer. But her path to achieve this coveted position in her sport was anything but smooth – she recently went public with the story about her first coach who sexually abused her for several years while she was a teenager. Kayla moved to the Boston area at 16 to put the past behind her and to train with the best judokas in the country at Pedro’s Judo Center. Not only has she overcome her past trauma, but she has cultivated an incredibly strong and inspired approach to living that blew my mind… I only had one training session to try and capture the raw emotion, strength, and intention she embodies – I wish I had more time with her, as always… Check out the photos below.

And check out the video piece made by badass Globe multimedia producer Lauren Frohne here.

Alcott Orchard House for The Boston Globe

In between very current work, I’ll also be posting assignments and images “from the archive” that I’ve shot in the past year or so, before I had my blog up – to give these images a place to live, a place to be seen.

I’ll start with this assignment from the Boston Globe to photograph a group of girls taking a tour of the Alcott Orchard House in Concord, Massachusetts, (circa 1690). It’s the home where Louisa May Alcott lived and wrote “Little Women”. The girls were enchanted by the house, but I was enchanted by them…

First-In-The-Nation

Welcome to my blog! It’s been a long time coming – I’ve been living in Boston for the last year, keeping busy with daily assignment work, but I’ve finally gotten around to launching this blog, which will be a place to share all of my work – the highlights, the outtakes, and the moments in between…

I thought posting some work from the first-in-the-nation Republican primary would be a good way to kick it off. I took a couple of days this week to go up to New Hampshire and shoot some of the political craziness… Since I didn’t have much time there, I mostly chased around Jon Hunstman, with a little Santorum thrown in. It was fascinating to witness the political campaign machine and accompanying media frenzy propelling these men forward into a potentially very powerful position. Smoke and mirrors for the lens and shutter…
